Maybe you know that almost the whole of South Yorkshire, including Barnsley is now licenced to be fracked, but do your neighbours?
Frack Free South Yorkshire (FFSY) are launching a new campaign to raise awareness of fracking in our region and we want you to get involved.
“The biggest hurdle we face is raising awareness of the fracking licences that now cover people’s homes in South Yorkshire,” says David Burley of FFSY. “Many people don’t know that the government has granted licences to explore for shale gas in nearly every town and village in the region, as they weren’t consulted.
“We have printed 30,000 leaflets and would like people to help us to deliver them. You can do as little or as much as you like. We believe that people deserve to be informed and just delivering to your own street would help us to raise awareness.”

Almost all of South Yorkshire is now licensed to be Fracked
The government’s controversial attempt to establish a shale gas industry in the UK took another step forward on Thursday when it handed out new licences for onshore gas and oil exploration in 159 blocks.

Today marks four years since the first and only 'high volume hydraulic slick water fracture' of shale rock in the UK.
It caused two earthquakes and deformed the well casing - forcing the operator, Cuadrilla, to abandon the well and our government to impose a one-year moratorium.
Since then many efforts have been made to resume fracking in the UK. Even Prime Minister David Cameron said he wanted to see shale gas production begin by the end of 2014. It didn’t; all that was achieved was a few exploratory boreholes.
Projects have been delayed, the reduced oil price has made the extraction of unconventional hydrocarbons even less economically attractive, and share prices have collapsed.
More countries have declared bans and moratoria and more scientific reports have emerged confirming the hazards from the fracking process. Time after time companies have breeched their permits, demonstrating that they cannot cope with current regulation and are failing to reduce the risks. The fracking companies have no social licence.
Meanwhile the campaigns against fracking and fossil fuel investment grow apace.
Time is running out for the fracking companies; four years have been lost already. Lord Browne has left both government and Cuadrilla.
The end is nigh.

Shale gas being completely oversold
“It is very frustrating to keep hearing that shale gas is going to
solve our energy problems – there’s no evidence for that whatsoever...
it's hype”, Prof Jim Watson, UKERC research director, told BBC News.
“It’s extraordinary that ministers keep making these statements. They clearly want to create a narrative. But we are researchers – we deal in facts, not narratives. And at the moment there is no evidence on how shale gas will develop in the UK.
“Shale gas has been completely oversold. Where ministers got this rhetoric from I have absolutely no idea. It’s very misleading for the public.”

Cheque Book Planning Consultation – please respond
“Why won’t these local authorities allow fracking? Let’s throw some more money at them …”
The government has launched a consultation on their policy of ‘rewarding’ local authorities for allowing fracking in their areas.
Their plan is for local authorities to keep 100% of the business rates associated with fracking (the usual amount is 50%). We feel this is tantamount to a bribe and, as central government funding of local authorities is being cut, councils may feel that the financial pressure to accept this payoff are too great to refuse. You can read more about this attempt at ‘cheque book planning’ in the Guardian.
There is more information on the consultation onthe gov.uk website, and here’s the link to the consultation document itself.
Please email or write to Mr Hopkins MP, who is leading the consultation, and say why allowing local authorities to keep the business rates generated from fracking is wrong. (see below for contact details). Please write this in your own words – they take less notice of form letters in these sorts of consultations. Here are some points you can make in your response:
Please put Business rates retention and shale oil and gas: technical consulation in the subject line. Or you can write to: Mr Kris Hopkins MP Business Rates and Settlement Division

(see below for contact details). Please write this in your own words – they take less notice of form letters in these sorts of consultations. Here are some points you can make in your response:
- It compromises the integrity and independence of local authorities when making decisions about fracking in their area.
- It is contrary to the statutory requirement for planning decisions to be made independently, and therefore may well be illegal.
- The general public will have no confidence that the planning authority will make an independent decision based on local concerns when they are being offered such incentives at a time of austerity and budget cuts.
- Instead of being rewarded for protecting the natural environment, councils are getting their bonuses for letting fracking take place.
- Fracking will not help the government reach carbon targets. On the contrary, it has been shown that when the increase in traffic and leaking methane that accompanies fracking are factored in, fracking creates more greenhouse gases than coal.
- The huge incentives and subsidies offered to the shale and gas industry are in stark contrast to the cuts in support for the renewable energy industry, which is the only way the country will achieve our legally binding target of an 80% decrease in CO2 emissions by 2030.
- It is inappropriate to use taxpayers’ money to incentivise fossil fuel production when we urgently need to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.
- The claim that ‘The measure could be worth up to £1.7 million for a typical site’ is unfounded and unsupported by evidence.
- When fracking causes environmental problems, the council will have to pay for the clean-up, which may mean they will have to spend more money than they gain from this scheme. There are no ‘robust rules’ to control the fracking industry, as you claim. The industry is almost entirely self-regulating and there are no laws whatsoever that are specificaly relate to fracking, which is a new technology.
- Fracking is more likely to destroy the local economy and result in the loss of far more jobs in the local agriculture and tourism industries than it creates.
- The huge incentives and subsidies offered to the shale and gas industry are in stark contrast to the cuts in support for the renewable energy industry, which is the only way the country will achieve our legally binding target of an 80% decrease in CO2 emissions by 2030.

Do you think the onshore oil & gas industry have a social licence in the uk?
It seems to us that the 'Fracking' industry might just be in the red.
What's gone wrong in the us fracking industry?
So the Fracking industry would like you to believe that in the UK things will be different, those dodgy Yanks just can't do a damn thing right.
The country to put the first man on the moon, just can't seem to drill the simplest little well without messing it up.
Well the FFSY team and many others don't buy this line.
If you only read one in depth document on Fracking, read this one.

Waste water from fracking operations linked to increase in earthquakes.
Another fracking cat, just got out of the fracking bag.
For years now the fracking industry has denied categorically, that its responsible for causing earthquakes.
The fact that the US has seen a direct correlation between the increase in fracking operations and the number of earthquakes is shear coincidence they say.
Remember the tobacco industry claiming the increase in cancer rates were unrelated to smoking?

The fracking industry produces billions of gallons of waste water per year, this is disposed of by pumping it at high pressure deep underground.
Researchers say there has been a forty-fold increase in the rate of quakes in the US state of Oklahoma between 2008-13.
The scientists found that the disposal of water in four high-volume wells could be responsible for a swarm of tremors up to 35km away.
The UK goverment, and the Labour party constantly say that we will have 'Gold Plated' safety standards in the UK. Well that's great, lets just hope that the 'Cowboys' riding in from the US to exploit our resources give a frack. More likely they will be like big tobacco and continue to deny any culpability when things go tragically wrong.

Dryden’s victory set a statewide precedent upholding the rights of local communities to use their zoning powers to ban or limit fracking. The success bolsters efforts in communities across the country—from Pennsylvania to California.

Will we get cheaper energy from fracking?
International trade agreements demand that all oil and gas be sold on the international markets where possible. In the case of the US, they can't comply because luckily for them they don't have sufficient terminal capacity to export much of their shale gas. And this has led to a local glut of supply and subsequent price drop.

dart face 90,000 local scottish residents at public inquiry
As troubled Australian fracking company Dart Energy faces an inquiry into its flagship project in Scotland, it’s worth reviewing the global resistance from local communities which has lead up to this point. Dart are desperately trying to push ahead with a multi-well drilling programme in the North West and East Midlands, while in Scotland their application for the first UK production of unconventional gas is the subject of a major public inquiry.
In 2012, Dart Energy was forced to abandon exploration in it’s licence areas in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. With community resistance growing in Australia Dart refocused it’s attention on Airth in Scotland calling it their flagship European unconventional gas prospect. Pilot testing and exploratory work had been carried out in the area without the vast majority of the local population knowing, having been passed by planning officers under delegated powers.
When Dart submitted plans for 22 new coal bed methane (CBM) wells on 14 sites with over 20km of pipeline to dump toxic waste water into the Firth of Forth, Falkirk and Stirling councils received over 2,500 objections to the planning application. A record number of objections. Extracting all the gas which Dart is bragging about to investors could eventually require over 1,000 CBM wells to be drilled in Dart’s central Scotland licence area.
Falkirk Council decided they did not have sufficient in-house expertise to determine the application and appointed engineering consultancy AMEC to peer review the case. Both Falkirk and Stirling councils returned non-determinations. Dart appealed to the Scottish Directorate of Planning and Environmental Appeals (DPEA) who referred the applications back to the Councils for a decision. Both councils now oppose the application on grounds of cumulative impact and the precautionary principle. A full scale inquiry starts today, Tuesday the 18th March.

Dart energy in chaos as aggressive stock market takeover puts its board in jeopardy

Dart Energy the company that want to frack in Bawtry are involved in an extraordinary battle to fight off an aggressive take over bid, that could see 80% of the companies board of directors fired.
In a letter to share holders Nick Davies the Chairman of Dart appealed to share holders to resist the takeover of the board by New Hope.
In his letter he said, "Whilst recognizing that the Industry and Dart has suffered over the last 18 months from continued opposition to unconventional gas in New South Wales we believe the refreshing approach being shown by national governments in other countries and the ultimate differential threat to Australian domestic energy prices means that Dart is now well positioned to enjoy high levels of growth in the UK in the near term and in Australia and Indonesia in the longer term".
A spokesperson from Frack Free South Yorkshire commented, "DART may feel they are pushing at an open door in the UK, however they will have to overcome years of opposition to their polluting activities. My advice to share holders would be to sell now before the bubble bursts, and invest in renewables".
